Showtyme male basketball club of Ibadan on Wednesday defeated Hoop Dreams Nigeria 74-49 to win the third edition of the Dreams Basketball Tournament.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Showtyme Angels also won the title in the female category bashing Amazon of Lagos 72-54.

Speaking later, Dayo Emmanuel, the coach of Showtyme Angels, expressed happiness  with the victory saying “to be sincere, I wasn’t expecting this type of finals. I must say I’m really impressed with both teams’ performance and not just my team.”

“The offense and defence of both teams are highly commended, it was an amazing female final,” he said.

Tunji Soroye, the sponsor of the competition, who claimed he grew up in Ibadan and knew the terrain, said he knew what upcoming basketballers faced.

“I started playing at around age  14, and all we did then was just practise and practise and no tournaments or competitions to guage how good you’re because all you do daily was just drills.

“When I was done playing basketball some years back, I wanted to help and give back to Nigeria.

“Then the idea to organise a yearly tournament struck me so that the kids can come and compete against one another.

“The competition will help them discover what they lack and areas know they are good at all,” he said.

He added that the 2024  edition is bigger because the last two editions had only teams based in Oyo state.

“This year, three teams came from outside Oyo state. The outside teams made it more competitive with bigger challenges .

“This edition is the best thus far due to the number of participants,” he said

Soroye added that many talents abound in Africa.

” I must say, we just don’t have the resources and provisions that other countries have.

“I see so many raw talents who need guidance, exposure and competitions to keep getting better,” he said.

NAN reports that 10 male and female teams took part in the three-day event.

The male clubs are: Hoop Dreams Nigeria, Showtyme of Ibadan, University of Ibadan, Liberty Spears Ibadan, and Egbeda Local Government Basketball of Ibadan.
