The organisers of Ondo State All-Stars competition says the major aims of the competition are to foster unity among old players and to keep fit.

The Chairman, Organising Committee of the second edition of the competition, Mr Olumide Akindele, said this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Akure.

Akindele also said part of the agenda was to bring old and retired but not tired ex- players together, to reminiscence on their old playing days and display their old football artistry to the upcoming players.

He said it would serve as a means of motivation to the upcoming stars, and advised the participating teams in the ongoing tournament to abide with the rules and regulations of the competition.

The Chairman added that the retired and not tired ex- players that played the game to high level of their career needed to come together once in a year to play together, mingle together for the love of the game.

“The whole idea behind the competition is to bring old play mates across the state and beyond together, some people are coming from outside the state to be part of this competition,” he said.

Akindele added that eight teams were participating in the competition, with the teams divided into two, four in each of the groups which he said would be played in round -robin format.

“Two will qualify from each group and they will go straight to play in semi final and winners will clash in final.”

“The competition is not a must win at all cost, our expectations from participating teams are to play good football, show class that they are professionals; they should show the upcoming players what it takes to be a veteran.

“Football is a game of contact, but we plead with all teams to play safely without injury, because it will be difficult or long to heal an adult injury; we appeal for injury free competition,” he said.
